Hear ye, film buffs and LGBT supporters alike! Hanoi International Queer Film Week is hosting a week-long run of local and international films about queer diversity in society. With this year’s theme as “Pride Journey”, every screening day presents a particular subject showcased by films involved. This year, the line-up is filled up of entries from Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar, China, USA, United Kingdom and many more.
Hanoi International Queer Film Week is a non-profit organization established to create awareness for the queer identities in Vietnamese society. It also aims to raise more opportunities for the LGBT community inside and outside the country. The organization believes that film is an effective medium to communicate the needs and importance of the queer community and for the prejudiced people to rise up from their capabilities. The theme, Pride Journey, is expanded to different circumstantial concepts namely “Who I Am”, “Discrimination”, “Love”, “Acceptance” and “Pride” throughout the whole week for better understanding of the LGBT community.
With the help of the Netherlands Embassy, Oxfam in Vietnam, iSEE, The Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents (TPD) and sponsorships given by the European Commission (EC), British Council and COC Netherlands, Hanoi International Queer Film Week (HIQFW) was created to celebrate the rights and love of the community — supporters or non-supporters alike. Screenings will run from April 17 to 22, 2017 in Rap Thang 8, near the Vietnamese Women’s Museum.
